At present, the street lighting energy consumption is approximately 4.4% of the total electrical energy generated in the U.S. Based on this, the House of Representatives proposed a new project named Street Lighting Energy Efficiency Retrofit Project, which asking for eliminating the nagative environmental impact of traditional street lighting system (eg. Incandscent, Halogen), replacing the existing street light with energy efficient LED fixtures.
The LED fixtures will consume a minimum of 40% less energy than the existing fixtures. LED fixtures have a life span of 2 to 3 times that of the existing fixtures and require less maintenance. The LED fixtures also produce a white light versus the yellow/orange light of the existing fixtures.
The Street Lighting Energy Efficiency Retrofit Project has been passed, and the first phase of this project is expected to be finished in 2011, and others will be finished both in 2013 and 2015. |
